Fed: Opp'n says don't refund millions back to industry

CANBERRA, Feb 25 AAP - The federal government should not refund the hundreds of millions
of dollars it has collected through a tax hike on alcopops, the opposition says.

Labor is facing an embarrassing defeat in the Senate as its measure to address binge
drinking fails to win the support of the crossbench.

The government lifted the tax rate on alcopops by 70 per cent via regulation last year
and needs to get supporting legislation through parliament by March 19 for the increase
to stand.
